The Story Behind the song How He Loves

The first time I heard this song, I thought it was just beautiful. I felt that it spoke of the intense passion, the fervent not-letting-go kind of love that the Lord has for all of us.

But all those times I found myself singing along to it, I never knew that the song was birthed out of such painful tragedy. John Mark McMillan wrote it following the death of his best friend. A youth leader who died the very night he prayed out loud “I’d give my life today if it would shake the youth of the nation.”

“It’s not even a worship song,” McMillan cries in the video. “It’s a story about a guy named Stephen who meets the Lord for the first time after he’s died. But I sing it like a worship song because I believe this song is gonna shake the youth of the nation.”
