Instant Entry #3: The Dream
Today I woke up with a start. I was drowning in dream after dream and like one trying to catch her breath, I pull myself out of the water and open my eyes awake. The world was dark and cold. And because I could hear the pattering of the rain against the roof, I knew it was wet. It was all a dream, I tell myself and I sigh in relief. I’m not one to remember dreams but I can’t seem to...

On reading Judges
Today I finished reading the book of Judges. It was like reading a compilation of short stories—some were wonderful, some were gripping, others were tragic. But most of them, I found to be atrocious.  I don’t mean it in a way to say that the writing’s terrible (in fact, I’d say otherwise for I enjoyed the read). But the stories touched on subjects like murder, rape,...

The Story Behind the song How He Loves The first time I heard this song, I thought it was just beautiful. I felt that it spoke of the intense passion, the fervent not-letting-go kind of love that the Lord has for all of us. But all those times I found myself singing along to it, I never knew that the song was birthed out of such painful tragedy. John Mark McMillan wrote it following the death of...

Dear God,
You can really be funny. Before I could talk about Your Lordship to others, You always make me practice it for at least a week. Now, just when I thought I’ve learned enough, you throw the same topic at me. You leave me amazed at how persistent Your love is in pursuing me. Still in so much awe, Rachel

Instant Entry #2: The Spell
Sountrack: First Breath After Coma by Explosions in the Sky Sometimes, memories just come at me quite unexpectedly. While on my way to work this morning, I remembered a bit of my childhood and how I started my love for music. I was 9 then and we’ve just moved from the busy streets of Manila to the green fields of the south. The quiet of the midday was both calming and overwhelming. It...

Instant Entry #1: This Weekend
This weekend was one of the most exhausting weekends I’ve ever had in my life. But it was all worth it because it was during this weekend that I was able to witness the various forms of God’s love and grace. It felt as though I was being attacked on all sides, not by the enemy, but by God’s blessed assurance that I can’t do anything to escape His love. And I want to take...

Switchfoot live in Manila
The concert blew me away! The band did not hold back! The best part of watching them perform live was the revelation that EVERY song they sang was really about God & for God. At the end, it was moving to watch all 5 band members drop on their knees and bow down their heads. It was a picture of servanthood, as though to give back all the glory to the King. :)

10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the  Israelites out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring  the Israelites out of Egypt?” I must admit, there are times that I sound like Moses.  Like when God calls me to do a seemingly daunting ministry work, self-doubt creeps in and more often than not, I find myself asking...

Because I don't need to see it to believe it.
This was Abram’s attitude of faith. And it should be ours too. In both Genesis 12 & 13, the Lord promised that He will bless Abram, his name will be great, and his offspring will inherit the land of Canaan. But Abram was aware of the reality that his wife, Sarai, was barren and that they were both in their old age. Although Abram kept God’s promise of countless offspring in his...

My Dream Job
It changes every other time but for now, it would probably be working for an online magazine like RELEVANT. I love how it’s unafraid to talk about God, Life, and Culture. I’d love to write about music and books, the way I used to in my other tumbleblog. Now how do I marry all these interests here?

Yesterday, I donated my blood for a friend.
She’s sick with dengue and her platelets went down to 20. But somehow the doctor, being a big believer of self healing, kept deferring blood transfusion unless really really necessary. Yet she told my friend to get ready, to ask people with the same blood type to donate just in case it drops further. As much as I was looking forward to be able to share life literally, I know that I am not...

A Lesson in Obedience
Somehow, I find myself taking a big role in a certain ministry at church. And me being new at this, I am, admittedly, overwhelmed. Scared even. But as I ran to a friend and spoke of my fears, I was reminded of the Israelites in Numbers 14. They moved in fear. And in their fear, they complained, grumbled, and angered God. With God, being the just Father that he is, gave the Israelites a...

Counting on God
This past month, I’ve fallen in love with New Life Worship’s 2008 release, Counting on God. It’s such a powerful album that some of the songs have become personal anthems to goad me on in this journey. That’s the beauty of songs, ain’t it? You can own them even if they’re never really yours to begin with. (And so I digress.) As I was going through lyrics...
